The New Competitive Moat: Why Distribution and Trust Beat Product in the AI Era

Technology has leveled the playing field. Anyone can build a product now. The question is: can you get anyone to care?

In this episode of The Go-to-Market Podcast, Fullcast Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Amy Osmond Cook sits down with serial entrepreneur Brandon Doyle, Founder of DAVID AI and Wallaroo Media, to unpack the strategic shift every revenue leader needs to understand.

The verdict is clear: your product is no longer your moat. Distribution, brand, and trust are.

The Problem: Everyone Can Build, But Few Can Break Through

AI has eliminated the technical barriers that once protected established companies. Doyle sees this firsthand, even in his own family.

His 14-year-old daughter recently decided to build a community app for teens with type-one diabetes. She has no coding experience. She is doing it anyway.

"She doesn't know how to code, right? But she can do that now."

This is the reality of what Doyle calls "vibe coding." The barrier to creation has collapsed. But this creates a new challenge: market saturation.

"It's easier than ever to launch something because of AI, and because of that, there's just more stuff being launched every day. There's so much noise to cut through."

The implication for revenue leaders is stark. Your product roadmap is not your competitive advantage. Your ability to capture attention is.

The Solution: Master Distribution, Brand, and Trust

Doyle identifies three interconnected pillars that form the foundation of defensible competitive advantage in the AI era.

Distribution Is the New Default

"The moat is distribution, marketing, becoming a master at that, and becoming a master at how to get whatever eyeballs you need to get on whatever you're trying to make money from. That's the moat."

This applies universally. Whether you run a SaaS company, lead a sales organization, or manage a marketing team, the fundamentals of capturing and holding attention have become the primary competitive battleground.

A great product sitting in obscurity generates zero revenue.

Personal Brand Outperforms Company Pages

Cook observes that algorithms on platforms like LinkedIn are prioritizing individual pages over company pages more than ever before. Doyle agrees.

"Anyone who is trying, whether you're a founder or if you're leading a sales org or a marketing team, you need to think about how do you get the word out on a personal level because that can cut through the noise way better than a brand campaign these days."

He points to Represent 247, a fitness apparel brand that grew to over $100 million in annual revenue in just four years. The secret? Founder George Heaton built the company through his personal brand.

"He does just such an amazing job of leading it through his personal brand."

People trust people more than they trust logos. Revenue leaders who invest in their own visibility create a durable advantage.

Trust Separates Winners from Commodity Players

"At what point do I want to stop buying the cheap stuff and start buying something that costs a little more because I can trust what that brand puts out?"

This dynamic extends to B2B. Buyers will pay a premium for reliability. They will pay a premium for relationships. They will pay a premium for trust.

The companies that earn that trust at scale will dominate their markets.

The Playbook: How to Operationalize Your Moat

Understanding the new moat is one thing. Building it requires deliberate action.

Use AI to Augment, Not Replace

Doyle's philosophy on AI implementation is direct.

"I don't really like the idea of AI replacing humans. That's not an approach that I take or that my company takes... I like the idea of AI augmenting humans to enable to take away the repetitive tasks and to do more valuable things on their own."

His company builds AI operating systems that integrate with existing workflows. The goal is handling backend complexity so humans can focus on strategy, creativity, and customer relationships.

Reinvest Savings Into Growth

Here is the counterintuitive finding from Doyle's work with clients.

"When clients hire David AI, they actually need to hire more humans because we find so many ways for them to grow with the increased profits that we save them."

AI creates efficiency. Smart leaders reinvest those gains into the new moat: more growth marketing, brand-building initiatives, and talented people who can execute those strategies.

Curate Your Inputs to Maintain Your Edge

Doyle maintains his competitive edge through two disciplines. Daily workouts keep his energy and focus sharp. Careful curation of his information diet keeps him current.

"If you curate the algorithm... the speed of perfectly designed new info on there is so strong that that's how I keep up to date with the latest of what's happening."

Your personal operating system matters. How you learn and process information is a critical component of your company's competitive advantage.

The Bottom Line

Technology is not the advantage. It is the tool that frees your team to build trust at scale.

The companies that will dominate are not those with the best algorithms or the fastest development cycles. They are the ones that master the art of getting noticed, build authentic relationships through personal branding, and earn the kind of loyalty that makes price comparisons irrelevant.

Start by auditing your distribution channels. Invest in your founder's voice. Use AI to create more space for human connection, not less.

The future belongs to those who earn trust at scale.
